Japanese Artisanship & Blade Care

Every blade in our collection is hand-forged using traditional Japanese techniques. Minor natural variations in grain, hammered finishes (Tsuchime), and scale texture (Kurouchi) are authentic signatures of the blacksmith's craft. Hand-wash and dry immediately after use.

Engineered to restore balance and command to larger Japanese blades, this 150mm octagonal (Hakkaku) knife handle delivers substantial reach, ergonomic indexing, and refined artisan styling. Available in three distinct natural hardwoods—dense Black Ebony, warm Rosewood, or clean Hard Maple—each handle is capped with a genuine, hand-polished water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno) for a seamless, moisture-resistant collar transition.

Designed specifically for custom knife makers and seamless re-handling, each handle features a precision-machined 10mm x 4mm tang entry slot backed by an internal secondary relief chamber. This structural relief allows stepped tang shoulders to seat cleanly and provides room for displaced epoxy or hot-melt resin to expand safely, eliminating hydraulic back-pressure and protecting the buffalo horn from stress cracks.

Key Features

  • Three Select Hardwood Variants:

    • Black Ebony: Ultra-dense, naturally water-resistant, and dark as obsidian. Adds substantial counterweight to balance heavy, forward-leaning chef knives.

    • Natural Rosewood: Rich reddish-brown tones with prominent dark grain lines and natural resinous oils that resist kitchen moisture.

    • Hard Maple: Blonde-to-caramel tight grain figure offering a clean, contemporary Scandinavian-Japanese aesthetic with resilient surface density.

  • Genuine Water Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Hand-fitted and polished to an ultra-flush transition with the wooden body, acting as a durable bolster that guards against tang-entry moisture intrusion.

  • Commanding 150mm Dimensions: Specifically proportioned for larger blades. Delivers optimal visual symmetry and counterbalance for 240mm–300mm Gyutos, 270mm–330mm Sujihikis, and 270mm–330mm Yanagibas.

  • Ergonomic Octagonal (Hakkaku) Geometry: Symmetrical eight-faceted profile seats securely along the joints of the palm and fingers, providing natural tactile index feedback for blade angle and slip resistance in wet prep environments.

  • Pre-Machined 10mm x 4mm Tang Entry & Relief Cavity: Accommodates traditional forged tang profiles while the internal secondary relief channel absorbs displaced adhesive during installation to prevent pressure splits.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines

  • Tang Sizing & Adjustments: Forged Japanese knife tangs vary by blacksmith workshop and region. If your knife’s tang shoulders exceed 10mm x 4mm, use a narrow flat needle file to gently widen the horn entrance mortise.

  • Relief Channel Dynamics: As you seat the blade into adhesive, the secondary interior chamber captures displaced glue. This prevents hydraulic compression from forcing the handle off or cracking the horn ferrule.

  • Adhesive Selection:

    • Reversible / Traditional: Use jeweler’s hot-melt glue or wood glue combined with wood dust. Allows future removal and re-handling using gentle heat application.

    • Permanent: Marine-grade two-part epoxy (e.g., G/flex 650) creates a 100% waterproof, permanent seal.

  • Natural Material Maintenance: Buffalo horn and natural hardwoods are organic materials. Never submerge the handle in water or run it through a dishwasher. Maintain moisture resistance and surface luster by occasionally applying camellia oil, food-safe mineral oil, or board wax.
