Occupying the coveted middle ground between compact utility grips and oversized slicer handles, this 140mm octagonal (Hakkaku) Japanese knife handle delivers refined control, ergonomic indexing, and artisan aesthetic balance. Hand-turned from select natural timbers and crowned with a polished natural water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno), it is offered in two traditional woods: classic Japanese Magnolia (Ho Wood) for an ultra-lightweight, high-traction traditional grip, or dense Rosewood for warm figuring and purposeful counterweight.

Engineered for precision knife customization and clean re-handling, the collar is pre-machined with a 10mm x 4mm tang entry slot supported by an internal secondary relief chamber. This channel architecture accommodates standard forged Japanese tang shoulders while giving displaced adhesive room to expand freely during seating—preventing hydraulic pressure splits in the horn collar or wooden handle body.

Key Features

  • Two Traditional Hardwood Variants:

    • Natural Rosewood: Dense, naturally oily, and richly grained with warm reddish-brown and dark espresso striations. Adds counterweight to pull the blade's balance point slightly rearward for enhanced nimble control.

    • Magnolia (Ho Wood / 朴の木): The historic standard of traditional Japanese kitchen cutlery. Lightweight, soft-textured, and naturally moisture-absorbent, Ho wood becomes velvety and non-slip when wet—the definitive choice of professional washoku and sushi chefs.

  • Genuine Water Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Hand-fitted and polished flush to the octagonal facets, creating a seamless, watertight barrier that protects the tang entry against moisture.

  • The 140mm "Sweet Spot" Proportions: Sits comfortably between standard 135mm prep handles and longer 145mm–150mm formats. Delivers extra palm clearance and balance for 180mm–210mm Gyutos, 165mm–180mm Santokus and Bunkas, or mid-sized Sujihikis.

  • Tactile Octagonal (Hakkaku) Profile: Symmetrical eight-sided geometry naturally indexes against finger joints, ensuring positive blade alignment feedback and slip resistance during extended prep shifts.

  • Pre-Machined 10mm x 4mm Tang Entry & Relief Cavity: Fits forged Japanese kitchen knife tangs cleanly, while the internal secondary cavity absorbs displaced epoxy or hot-melt adhesive to eliminate internal pressure buildup.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines

  • Tang Sizing & Adjustment: Forged Japanese knife tangs vary by blacksmith. If your blade's tang shoulders sit wider than 10mm x 4mm, use a narrow flat needle file to gently ease the horn entrance mortise until a snug friction fit is achieved.

  • Relief Channel Function: When seating the tang with hot-melt glue or epoxy, the internal relief cavity provides space for displaced adhesive. This prevents hydraulic back-pressure from forcing the handle off or stressing the buffalo horn collar.

  • Adhesive Recommendations:

    • Traditional / Reversible: Jeweler’s hot-melt adhesive or wood glue mixed with fine matching wood dust allows for clean, heat-reversible removal in the future.

    • Permanent: Marine-grade two-part epoxy (e.g., G/flex 650) creates a 100% waterproof, permanent seal against internal moisture.

  • Wood & Horn Maintenance: Natural wood and horn are organic materials sensitive to dishwasher cycles and sitting water. Maintain surface luster and prevent moisture checking by periodically conditioning the wood and horn with pure camellia oil, food-grade mineral oil, or board wax.
