A pure celebration of single-timber craftsmanship, this 130mm octagonal (Hakkaku) Japanese knife handle is turned from a single, seamless block of select African Bubinga wood. By eliminating the traditional composite ferrule joint entirely, this mono-construction design showcases an unbroken, flowing grain line from the tang entry all the way to the butt, delivering exceptional structural integrity and an uninterrupted tactile feel in the hand.

Bubinga (Guibourtia demeusei)—often prized in fine woodworking as "African Rosewood"—is celebrated for its remarkable hardness, interlocking grain matrix, and deep burgundy-to-espresso coloring. Naturally rich in resinous oils, it offers superior resistance to ambient kitchen moisture, swelling, and warping without the need for synthetic coatings.

Engineered specifically for custom knife makers and clean re-handling projects, the handle collar features a precision-machined 13mm x 2mm tang entry slot backed by an internal secondary relief chamber. This opening is ideally scaled for thin-stock forged tangs and laser-ground Japanese blades, while the internal relief cavity allows displaced epoxy or hot-melt adhesive to expand freely without inducing hydraulic pressure splits in the dense natural hardwood.

Key Features

  • Seamless Mono-Construction: Carved entirely from a single solid block of dense Bubinga wood. Eliminates glue joints, ferrule transitions, and thermal expansion discrepancies between dissimilar materials for maximum durability.

  • Continuous Natural Grain Figure: Unbroken grain runs the full length of the 130mm body, showcasing Bubinga’s characteristic crimson undertones, dark figuring, and chatoyant luster.

  • Natural Moisture Resistance & Heft: Dense and naturally oily, Bubinga resists kitchen fluids and humidity shifts while providing enough mass to anchor nimble kitchen knives comfortably in the palm.

  • Compact 130mm Format: Proportioned specifically for agility and knuckle clearance on smaller to mid-sized cutlery. Offers visual balance and control for 135mm–165mm Pettys, 150mm–165mm Ko-Bunkas, and lightweight 165mm Santokus or Nakiris.

  • Octagonal (Hakkaku) Ergonomics: Symmetrical eight-faceted geometry naturally registers into the joints of the palm and fingers, providing tactile edge-angle indexing and reliable slip resistance during detailed board work or in-hand trimming.

  • Precision 13mm x 2mm Tang Entry: Sized specifically to fit wider, thinner forged tang profiles and laser blades without excess gap filler.

  • Internal Relief Chamber: Bored with a secondary expansion cavity behind the primary entry slot to safely catch displaced adhesive during installation, preventing hydraulic pressure splits inside the solid timber.
