Elevate your blade with the warmth, density, and distinct organic beauty of this 135mm octagonal (Hakkaku) Japanese knife handle. Turned from select dense rosewood, it showcases deep reddish-brown tones and rich grain figure, naturally fortified by resinous oils that resist water absorption during intensive prep. The handle is crowned with an exhibition-grade "tiger" water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno), distinguished by warm amber, blonde, and dark streaked marbling that ensures no two handles are identical.

Engineered with custom knife builders and re-handling in mind, the handle features a precision-machined 12mm x 3.5mm tang slot paired with an internal relief hole, providing ample clearance for forged tang tapers and excess adhesive displacement for a crack-free, watertight installation.

Key Features

  • Dense Natural Rosewood Body: Naturally oily, water-resistant, and heavy enough to provide balanced counterweight to forged Japanese blades without feeling cumbersome.

  • Exhibition "Tiger" Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Sourced from natural water buffalo horn featuring rare blonde, caramel, and honey-toned marbled striations. Buffed to a smooth, seamless transition against the wood body.

  • Octagonal (Hakkaku) Ergonomics: The traditional eight-faceted geometry naturally indexes along the finger joints, providing tactile edge-alignment feedback and a secure grip in wet prep environments.

  • Pre-Machined Tang Entry & Relief Channel: Features a 12mm x 3.5mm primary entrance mortise backed by an internal secondary relief chamber. This design accommodates stepped tang shoulders and allows excess adhesive/epoxy to expand safely without inducing hydraulic pressure splits.

  • Versatile 135mm Proportions: The classic medium proportion suited for Japanese culinary blades, offering ideal visual and physical balance for 165mm–180mm Santokus, Bunkas, and Nakiris, as well as nimble 180mm–210mm Gyutos.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines

  • Tang Fitting: Due to variations across individual blacksmiths, traditional forged tangs may require light filing. Use a flat needle file to expand the 12mm x 3.5mm opening if your blade's tang shoulders sit wide.

  • Internal Relief Channel Function: The integrated relief cavity behind the primary slot is designed to catch excess hot-melt adhesive or epoxy during installation. This prevents hydraulic back-pressure from cracking the horn ferrule as the tang is seated.

  • Adhesive Options:

    • Traditional / Reversible: Use jeweler’s hot-melt glue or wood glue mixed with fine sawdust. This allows future removal via gentle hot-water immersion or heat gun application.

    • Permanent: Marine-grade two-part epoxy (e.g., G/flex 650) for a hermetically sealed, permanent joint.

  • Horn Maintenance: Buffalo horn is a natural keratin material. Avoid soaking the handle in standing water, and occasionally condition the ferrule and rosewood with mineral oil, camellia oil, or wood wax to maintain its luster and prevent drying.
