Designed to provide commanding balance and visual warmth to larger chef knives and long slicers, this 145mm octagonal (Hakkaku) Japanese knife handle is turned from hand-selected natural rosewood. Celebrated for its tight grain structure, natural resinous oils, and rich reddish-brown hues, rosewood delivers superior moisture resistance and a reassuring, weighted counterpoint to forged steel blades.
The handle is capped with an exceptionally rare tiger blonde water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno), featuring luminous streaks of translucent amber, cream, and warm caramel marbling. Precision-bored for custom knife projects and re-handling, it features a 12mm x 3.5mm primary tang slot accompanied by an internal secondary relief chamber, ensuring seamless tang insertion and displacement of excess adhesive without risking hydraulic stress fractures.
Key Features
-
Dense Natural Rosewood Body: Naturally oily and water-resistant, rosewood provides the substantial heft required to counterbalance the forward weight of longer Gyutos, Sujihikis, and Yanagibas.
-
Exhibition "Tiger Blonde" Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Sourced from natural water buffalo horn showcasing rare blonde, honey, and marbled amber striations. Hand-polished to create a flush, seamless transition against the rosewood body.
-
Octagonal (Hakkaku) Architecture: The eight-sided profile naturally registers along finger joints, ensuring a slip-resistant grip and clean tactile awareness of blade angle during heavy board work and delicate draw cuts.
-
Pre-Machined Tang Slot & Deep Relief Channel: Features a 12mm x 3.5mm entry slot paired with a deep internal relief hole. This internal chamber provides clearance for stepped tang shoulders and gives epoxy or hot-melt adhesive room to displace safely during installation.
-
Commanding 145mm Dimensions: Specifically proportioned for larger blades, delivering ideal visual symmetry and balance for 240mm–270mm Gyutos, 270mm–300mm Sujihikis, and 270mm–300mm Yanagibas.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines
-
Tang Fitting: Because forged Japanese knife tangs vary by blacksmith workshop, slight sizing adjustments may be necessary. Use a narrow diamond needle file to gently widen the 12mm x 3.5mm opening if your blade has broad tang shoulders.
-
Internal Relief Channel Function: The relief cavity behind the primary entry slot provides a reservoir for displaced adhesive. When driving the blade into place, this cavity prevents hydraulic pressure from building up and splitting the horn ferrule.
-
Adhesive Options:
-
Traditional / Reversible: Use jeweler's hot-melt adhesive or wood glue combined with fine rosewood sawdust. This creates a secure bond that can be gently reversed with a heat gun or hot water if future re-handling is desired.
-
Permanent: Marine epoxy (such as G/flex 650) creates a permanent, hermetically sealed installation resistant to moisture intrusion.
-
-
Natural Material Care: Buffalo horn and rosewood are organic materials. Never leave the handle submerged in water or run through a dishwasher. Maintain luster and prevent drying by occasionally treating both the wood and horn with camellia oil, food-grade mineral oil, or board wax.
