Japanese Artisanship & Blade Care
Japanese Artisanship & Blade Care
Every blade in our collection is hand-forged using traditional Japanese techniques. Minor natural variations in grain, hammered finishes (Tsuchime), and scale texture (Kurouchi) are authentic signatures of the blacksmith's craft. Hand-wash and dry immediately after use.

Proportioned specifically for nimble in-hand agility and compact kitchen blades, this 120mm octagonal (Hakkaku) Japanese knife handle delivers precision tactile control and refined artisan aesthetics. Hand-turned from premium natural hardwoods and capped with a polished water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno), it is offered in two distinct material finishes: warm, dense Rosewood featuring dark espresso grain figuring, or clean Hard Maple offering a crisp, tight-grained blonde appearance.
Engineered for seamless custom knife builds and re-handling, the collar is pre-machined with a 9mm x 3mm primary tang entry slot supported by an internal secondary relief chamber. This scaled opening accommodates the narrower tangs typical of Japanese petty and paring blades, while the interior cavity gives displaced epoxy or hot-melt adhesive room to expand—eliminating hydraulic pressure spikes that can crack the horn collar during seating.
Key Features
-
Two Select Hardwood Finishes:
-
Natural Rosewood: Resilient, naturally oily, and richly figured with dark reddish-brown tones. Adds deliberate counterweight to small blades for stable, comfortable pinch grips.
-
Hard Maple: Clean, modern, and dense with tight blonde-to-caramel grain striations, delivering exceptional impact resistance and a bright Scandinavian-Japanese aesthetic.
-
-
Genuine Water Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Hand-fitted and polished flush against the octagonal facets, forming a durable, watertight barrier at the tang entry.
-
Compact 120mm Utility Proportions: Scaled specifically to prevent small knives from feeling handle-heavy. Provides ideal balance and knuckle clearance for 90mm–135mm Pettys, 120mm–135mm Ko-Bunkas, and dedicated paring blades.
-
Ergonomic Octagonal (Hakkaku) Profile: Symmetrical eight-faceted geometry naturally indexes along finger joints, ensuring positive blade alignment feedback and a non-slip hold during detailed, off-the-board peeling and trimming.
-
Pre-Machined 9mm x 3mm Tang Entry & Relief Cavity: Scaled specifically for smaller forged tangs, while the internal secondary cavity absorbs excess adhesive to prevent hydraulic back-pressure during installation.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines
-
Tang Sizing & Adjustment: Forged Japanese petty tangs vary between smiths. If your blade's tang shoulders sit slightly wider than 9mm x 3mm, use a narrow needle file to ease the horn entrance mortise until a secure friction fit is achieved.
-
Relief Cavity Mechanics: When setting the blade with adhesive, the internal relief chamber provides a reservoir for displaced glue. This prevents hydraulic back-pressure from forcing the handle off or stressing the buffalo horn collar.
-
Adhesive Selection:
-
Traditional / Reversible: Jeweler’s hot-melt adhesive or wood glue mixed with fine matching wood dust allows for clean, heat-reversible removal in the future.
-
Permanent: Marine-grade two-part epoxy (e.g., G/flex 650) creates a 100% waterproof, permanent seal.
-
-
Wood & Horn Maintenance: Natural wood and horn are organic materials sensitive to excess moisture and dishwasher cycles. Preserve surface luster and prevent moisture checking by periodically conditioning the handle with pure camellia oil, food-safe mineral oil, or board wax.
