A versatile mid-length Japanese replacement handle, this 138mm octagonal (Hakkaku) wa-handle is hand-turned from premium natural hardwoods and paired with a polished water buffalo horn ferrule (tsuno). Available in either dense, obsidian Black Ebony or warm, figured Rosewood, this handle provides an ergonomic grip, natural water repellence, and the necessary counterweight to pull the balance point of forged blades closer to the heel.
Tailored for custom knife projects and clean re-handling, the collar is pre-machined with a 12mm x 3mm tang entry slot backed by an internal secondary relief chamber. This configuration accommodates standard forged Japanese tang shoulders while giving displaced adhesive room to expand freely during installation, preventing hydraulic pressure fractures in the horn or wood.
Key Features
-
Two Select Hardwood Options:
-
Black Ebony: Dense, heavy, and naturally oily with an ultra-smooth finish. Adds substantial counterweight mass to balance forward-leaning kitchen blades.
-
Natural Rosewood: Rich reddish-brown tone featuring deep espresso grain streaks and natural resinous oils that resist kitchen moisture.
-
-
Genuine Water Buffalo Horn Ferrule: Hand-fitted and polished flush with the octagonal facets, creating a seamless, watertight transition at the tang entry.
-
Ergonomic Octagonal (Hakkaku) Profile: Symmetrical eight-faceted geometry naturally registers into the joints of the fingers, providing tactile edge-angle alignment and slip resistance during extended prep work.
-
Pre-Machined 12mm x 3mm Slot & Relief Cavity: Accommodates traditional forged kitchen knife tangs, while the interior relief cavity captures excess epoxy or hot-melt adhesive to eliminate internal pressure buildup.
-
Versatile 138mm Format: A balanced mid-size handle proportioned for 165mm–180mm Santokus, Bunkas, and Nakiris, as well as 180mm–210mm Gyutos and long utility blades.

Installation & Fitting Guidelines
-
Tang Sizing & Adjustment: Forged Japanese tang profiles vary by workshop. If your knife’s tang shoulders exceed 12mm x 3mm, use a narrow flat needle file to gently widen the horn entrance mortise until achieving a flush friction fit.
-
Relief Channel Function: When driving the tang home with adhesive, the internal relief cavity provides space for displaced glue, preventing hydraulic resistance from forcing the handle off or cracking the horn ferrule.
-
Adhesive Selection:
-
Traditional / Reversible: Jeweler’s hot-melt glue or wood glue mixed with fine matching wood dust allows for clean, heat-reversible removal in the future.
-
Permanent: Marine-grade two-part epoxy (e.g., G/flex 650) creates a 100% waterproof, permanent installation.
-
-
Natural Material Maintenance: Natural wood and buffalo horn are moisture-sensitive organic materials. Avoid prolonged soaking or dishwasher cycles. Maintain surface luster and prevent moisture checking by periodically conditioning the handle with pure camellia oil, food-grade mineral oil, or board wax.
